Historical Dance in Headington, Oxford

Georgettes of Oxford is delighted to offer two historical dance classes a month; one a Regency and Georgian Contra Dance Class open to all, the other an intermediate 17th – early 19th century historical dance class – both at the Chadwick Dance Studio, Cheney School, Cheney Lane, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7QH.

Regency and Georgian Contra Dance Class
Summer Term Dates: 24th of April (6:30-9:30pm), 22nd of May, 12th of June, and 10th & 17th of July
Time: 7-9pm
Location: The Chadwick Dance Studio, Cheney School, Cheney Lane, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7QH

Details: This lesson is split into three sections:
The Dance Class: 7:00-7:30pm – For beginners to cover the basics of Regency and Georgian contra (or country) dance, including arms, simple footwork and easier dances. For those new to Georgettes and/or historical dance, it is recommend attending this class for at least the first term.
The First Season: 7:30-8:30pm – Our middle hour is open to all and focuses on learning steps and medium difficulty dances. We also have some time for a social break during this hour.
The Nonpareil: 8:30-9:00pm – Suitable for intermediate historical dancers During the final hour of the class we learn more complicated footwork and harder contra (or country) dances.

Intermediate 17th – Early 19th Century Historical Dance Class
Summer term dates: 15th of May, 5th of June and 24th of July (at St Peter’s Church, Wolvercote)
Time: 7:00-9:00pm

Details: This class for is intermediate and above historical dancers.
We study basic French Noble Style Baroque dance, learning the steps and simple partner and solo dances, as well as the more complicated Georgian contra (or country) dances and Regency Quadrilles.

Summer Picnic and 17th – Early 19th Century Historical Dance Class
Dates: 7th and 21st of August
Time: 7:00-9:00pm
Location: The Old School Room, St Peter’s Church, Turn Turn, Wolvercote, Oxford, OX2 8AQ
Dance Mistress: Dr Helen Davidge
Details: Please bring a picnic and rug. If the weather is nice we will picnic and dance (including practising the dances for the display at the Bodleian on the 4th of October) in the Churchyard; if the weather is inclement, we will dance and picnic inside the Old School Room.

How Much Does it Cost
The cost is £5 for the class, whether you stay for one, two or three hours.
Once you have attended two classes, and decide you would like to continue, there is an annual fee (due in January) of £10 to cover insurance. Reduced to £5 if joining after June.

What to Wear and Bring
There is no kitchen, so it is advisable to bring a bottle of water with you.
Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear for moving and dancing around in.
Not essential but Ballet or Jazz shoes or Greek sandals are recommended for regular attendees.
No partner or costume necessary.
Over 18s only.

As well as learning dances our favourite Heroes and Heroines would have danced to, these are social dances and the aim is to have fun!
