“It is my very own ball! Is it not exciting?” – These Old Shades

Be transported back to Eighteenth-Century Versailles, the ballrooms of London and Paris with the period music of Follia at the These Old Shades Ball hosted by Georgettes of Oxford celebrate 100 years of These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer, graciously supported by the Heyer Estate.
The ball will take place in the beautiful Medieval building of The Divinity School, part of The Bodleian; and is the oldest surviving purpose-built building of the University of Oxford.
We will have a range from easy to intermediate level early to mid-Eighteenth-Century dances, which Georgette Heyer’s characters could have danced, as well as some Country and Baroque Dance Displays.

There will be no bar; free bottles of water will be available
There will not be any food served at the Ball, so please eat before hand
We will be dancing on a flagstone dance floor, which will be hard and potentially uneven
As it is an old building it may be cold in October

All dances will be walked through before, and will be called by experienced dance mistress Dr Helen Davidge: A classically trained dancer, who started to learn Ballet at the age of three. About a decade ago she started to learn eighteenth and early nineteenth century country dancing and Baroque dance. She now teaches Georgettes of Oxford’s dance classes, has called for celebration Balls for Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday, as well as having taught historical dance in Malaysia and Japan.

Featuring the musical talents of Follia: Diane Moore, Ibrahim Aziz, William Summers and Yeo Yat-Soon
Follia is a flexible group of baroque musicians specializing in programmes of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century chamber music. They all play on instruments of the period or faithful reproductions. They present carefully researched programmes, including curated introductions, which draw on related artistic developments such as art and literature to bring interesting historical perspectives on this fascinating period of history. They perform regularly throughout the London, South East England and East Anglia often in historical settings.
